When you’re looking to paint the exterior of your home, one thing that you absolutely need to do is to properly clean the exterior — and power washing can sometimes be one of the best ways to get your home exterior clean.
Of course, power washing does come with its drawbacks — and there are even some things that you can do while power washing that might not only be detrimental to your cleaning, but they might cause damage that cannot be undone to your home exterior or other things that get hit by the spray of water.
One thing that you might do when you start out with power washing is not realizing that your power washer comes with a set of nozzles that have come with a standard set of color coding, each of which corresponds with a different angle of spray.
The smaller the angle of the spray, the more intense — after all, if you’re spreading out the same amount of water over a larger relative area, it will have to be less intense, right?
The red nozzle, for example, is the most powerful at zero degrees — think of it a bit like a water pistol that you should never aim at another person because that is just how strong it is.
Most people can get their cleaning done with the green nozzle.
Another issue that people have when they power wash is using too much pressure.
There are power washers out there that are extremely… well, powerful — and if you have the washer set too strong, you’re going to cause some serious damage to the things you’re trying to wash.
To resolve this issue, you’re going to want to start off by not using a lot of pressure and then working your way up — better to use too little pressure and then increase than to start with too much.
If you stand too close to the surface that you are washing, you are going to possibly cause damage even if you’re not using too much pressure.
The best thing you can do is start at a greater distance and then approach a little bit until you are at a comfortable distance and are able to wash the surface.
If you are not going to paint the exterior of your home, the best thing to do is not to use a pressure or power washer.
The reason that this is the case is that when you use one of these systems to clean your home exterior, you almost always strip some of the paint that is there — but of course, if you’re looking to paint, this is not an issue.
Hot water can be used by commercial property cleaners as their properties are usually a bit more durable and can stand the hot water treatment.
Your typical home exterior, on the other hand, does not work the same way and can be damaged if you use hot water.
If you get the power washer and plug it in and attach it to a water source and just start blasting away without taking the time to read the manual, there’s a good chance you’re not going to have a good time.
Before you take any steps in using your power washer, make sure that you fully understand how it works — there are plenty of tutorial videos available!
Lastly, do not even think about washing a tile roof — all you’re going to do is possibly damage the roof itself, and maybe even get some of the tiles to come off of it.
Do yourself a favor and either take care in how you wash your roof — with the right tools — or hire a company like Militello Painting and Powerwashing to handle the cleaning job for you!
